I can't seem to blog on a consistent basis. However, this was too cute to pass up. I found this on the table this morning. How does a 4 year old think this? She's writing so well! I guess we need to work on self esteem....or get Mads to shut her mouth!!!!!

Sad Day

The other morning Mads and Lola found a dead baby bird in the yard. It had been windy the day before so we figured that the poor little thing blew out of the nest high up in the palm tree. We gathered it in a shoe box, only to find another...and then another. Mads was quite saddened and immediately drafted up this little eulogy. Tonight we had a proper burial for the 3 little birds...and a colorful headstones marks the site. What sweet girls I have...what sweet girls.

Roller Derby

I've been saying it for a while, but Lola will make a great roller derby chick. She's strong, spunky, and has such a great sense of style. We haven't tried out the roller skates yet, but she's definitely got THE LOOK.

I need to get back to posting regularly. The girls are getting older and soon will be bothered by my chronicling of their lives. They don;t know now, so I'll indulge you. Tonight they wanted to play restaurant and make their own menus. Lola put broccoli on her menu and spelled Poce (confused the b for a p, but still, not too bad for 4 years old!). Madeline had creative spelling on her menu as well. I especially like noshos....anyone want to market this?

So I really freaked out. I knew that mads would love this opportunity to get close and personal with these birds. I figured I could handle it. I was wrong. Jody and I were laughing nervously so much so that I started to cry. They landed on your outstretched arm and dug their talons into it. Maybe my arm is too meaty and Madeline's is nice and bony. She was thrilled and Lola, unfortunately, took my lead and was quite frightened as well. At least I tried....TWICE!!!!

Lemonade Stand

Madeline really wanted to have a lemonade stand last weekend...even though it's been over 110 for a while. So we baked a yummy cake and decorated a sign and sat and waited in the shade of the carport. We had a few REAL customers (meaning neighbors) and a few friends that I texted stopped by. Dad even came home from his 7am-7 pm shift for a refreshment. All in all, it was a good day...except Lola ended up in the hospital that night to get some IV antibiotics to treat a kidney infection. Looking at these pictures, it's hard to believe that she was that sick. She's all better now and is back to her sassy self!

Garden, Part Deux

So now I have some really big vegetables and some small ones as well. We have these great little lemon boy cucumbers!

Check out the giant squash...and no there are no hormones or synthetic fertilizers....all natural expensive water and tons of free sunshine! I swear these plants grow inches over night. It's crazy!

LOST TOOTH

Hurray! Finally Madeline has lost her first tooth. She's been waiting for this for a while, being that she's one of the youngest for her grade. The tooth was kinda dangling for a while and I was to squeamish to pull it (as was she). So my friend, Preethy just yanked it out...no pain, no tears!

Gardening

We've had a garden now for a couple seasons. It's so fun to watch these little tiny plants grow into super yielding crops. We planted Easter Sunday under the tipsy direction of my step mom. I kept saying that we had way too much to plant in our limited space, but she kept talking about square foot gardening...although in our case it can be more like square 6 inch gardening. In a 2ft x2 ft space we have:

2 artichoke plants (which grow into bushes 4 ft in diameter)

2 squash plants

4 or so pepper plants

oh yeah...and a couple watermelon plants

And for the rest of the garden we have about 6 more squash/zucchini plants, 4 strawberry, 4 tomato, a bunch pf cucumber and many herbs. It's fun to watch it grow and harvest what we're going to eat for dinner. The girls have always been pretty good eaters, but it's much more fun to eat veggies you grow yourself...and no salmonella tomatoes in this house!

This evening, this is how Madeline and Lola entertained themselves. I guess this is case in point why siblings are so important. Lola sat in the babydoll stroller while Mads ran as fast as she could from one end of the patio to the other, on occasion crashing in the bushes. I am going to try to be better about recording the hmorous things that the girls have been doing/saying lately. It seems that life has just been happening, without much note of the giggles I get! So this morning I make a mini bagel with cream cheese and apricot jelly for Lola. I make sure the flavor is cool with her and she says, "I don't like papercuts on my fingers, but it's good on a bagel." I laughed and she asked me to please not laugh at her. I insisted that she is adorable and funny. I'm not sure if I convinced her...

Hike to See Wildflowers, Part 1

So we went on this hike to see wildflowers. They are supposed to be spectacular this year, with our abundant 6 inches of rain since August 2007. The flowers were OK, but it was great to get out and do a little hike. 1.25 miles and Lola walked most of the way. She insisted on bringing her backpack, which was in the car, storing tap and ballet shoes and a change of clothes for school. I warned her that if she wanted to bring it along, she'd be carrying it the whole way. Of course, she was cool with that...until about 5 minutes into the walk. Lucky for her, she has a compassionate sister who helped her out. A little Lola love

Echo's pretty skinny...not a problem that our family has. I took her in to be spayed and the vet said that she was too skinny and didn't like that she had diarrhea. We did a few tests and sweet Echo has a parasite in her belly. It's pretty treatable, but poor thing. She's been through so much in her 20 months of life.

The first puppy didn't work out, but we got the most perfect dog for the Foti fam. She's a Springer Spaniel, 18 months old and the sweetest dog ever. The girls bonded immediately and sweet Echo seems to be in a groove here. Welcome!

Art Show 2008

Madeline was in an art show this weekend and it was awesome. It was in a great gallery in Old Town Scottsdale and all of the art was professionally installed. She was allowed to show 10 pieces and I think she squeezed 11 in. She's so prolific and so amazing. Yes, I am a little biased, but I'm right. So she's in this show and gets all kinds of kudos and accolades from various attendees. She sold most of her work (it all went to charity). Afterwards she wanted mac and cheese so we went to this little restaurant that has super cheesy mac and other tasty food and had a great dinner in her honor. In the middle of dinner, she whispers in my ear, "Mom, this is the best day of my whole life.....thank you soooo much." She's so amazing. So amazing!

Polar Express

Since I couldn't get it together in time and for the fact that you have to make reservations for the Polar Express in December for the following year (on a weekend night), we took the polar express to last weekend to thank Santa for his generosity. Mads was mesmerized with Santa and the bell he gave her. Santa even told her to make sure that she doesn't have a hole in her pocket. Wow. She was thrilled!

We closed out 2007 with lobsters. Maria used the Hillary nutcracker I got her for Christmas (she's not a fan of Hillary and even though I don't mind her and might even support her, I can have a sense of humor and have political fun!) It looks like Mads is trying to strangle her!

All was well until 1/1/08. And then the sickness began. We had vomiting, chills, diarrhea, fever, cough, ear infection. Everyone (but lucky me) got at least a titch of it, but Lola was hit the worst. I think she lost 2 pounds in the week she was sick. Poor Lola.

Hanukkah

We're working on learning the songs you sing while lighting the candles. We do lots of humming along, but we're making progress. We had a fun Hanukkah party with all of our friends last night...ate delicious latkes (original and sweet potato) drank delicious blueberry vodka sodas (at least the adults did!), listened and watched our friend Laila do a hind jive to "Oh Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, come light the menorah..." and decorated cookies. I was the only jew there...well I guess I should count lola and mads...so there were 3 of us. It was fun!

The princess obsession has finally taken over. Lola ALWAYS wants to be a princess (except for that time last night when she had to pee and instead of going potty on the potty, where princesses go I assured her, she chose to remove the dress (thus becoming NOT a princess) and peed on the rocks outside.) Nice. She makes a mom proud. Well, she actually does.

The other night she tried to sleep in pictured princess gown. I made her put on a nightgown. However, before I went to bed that night, this is how I found her in bed.

Butterfly Update

Well, all 5 caterpillars turned into butterflies. One was a little slow to form a chrysalis and was slow to turn into a butterfly. But all 5 did make it. After having a fun week observing them in the habitat, we decided to release them. 4 flew right over the house (so much for them staying nearby the location of release for a few days....they got far far away....and very quickly). However, one poky one stuck around. So Madeline handled it, and handled it so much that a leg and part of a wing came off. That butterfly would just sit on an orange slice all day long, using its long probiscus to eat. Well, after a few days, it died. Mads wanted to bury her so we did and she said nice wirds about how thankful she was that the butterfly let her watch its transformation from tiny caterpillar, to chrysalis and then butterfly. It was quite touching.

And I misses a shot of the actual release....I guess I was too consumed myself!

Cooking

A long time ago Madeline said she wanted to be a mommy because mommies cook. Well, she's not a mom yet, but she loves to help cook. She likes to chop veggies, crack eggs...oh how she likes to crack eggs, and mix and stir. We haven't graduated to cook top cooking, or microwave cooking yet. For now, she's just my prep helper.

Harvesting Butterflies

Madeline received a butterfly habitat for her birthday. We sent off for 5 caterpillars and over the last week, we've watched them grow from about 1/4" to an inch and a half. They are almost all now in the chrysalis stage and are hanging upside down in the provided jar. It's really cool to watch this happen in from of our eyes and Mads is so excited! She begged for me to give her a phone today while she was at school today so that I could call her when they turn into butterflies. She doesn't want to miss a thing. Hopefully this metamorphosis will take place in the evening or on the weekend!

Madeline and Lola are now sharing a room. It's OK most of the time. Lola likes to keep Mads up at night, and wakes her up early in the morning. However, they have ended up in the same bed in the morning and this shot of them last night was just too cute. Madeline's position is typical...hard asleep with her face in a book.

We were listening to the Annie soundtrack yesterday and Ms. Hannigan's "Little Girls" came on. Madeline said she was mean, and I said that she's just a drunk. Of course that demanded an explanation, and I said, "It's when you drink too much alcohol and act silly or mean." Madeline said, "ya, like when she pored her alcohol into the bathtub." Lola then says, "I don't pour mine in the bathtub." I said, "Pour your what?" Her response, "My wine...I drink it all up." And she does....she loves wine, and sangria, and vodka soda....sips of course, but she'd drink the whole glass if given an opportunity. Ugh.

So how do we keep cool in this summer heat? Well, if you live in Phoenix, you can go to the zoo for a snow day. They bring in piles of "snow" for the kids and animals to play in. Mads had fun making snowballs and fearless Lola loved the 30 foot water slide.

Harvesting Caterpillars

Madeline continues her foray into entomology. She's been collecting caterpillars that she finds in the house. Eeww, I know. So I did some research to see what a young caterpillar needs to grow into a butterfly. I found out that they are voracious, but picky eaters and each species of caterpillar only eats a specific species of leaf. Hmm. How to decide. So Mads just put some random leaves in the first time. The first one died. Catty # 2 was found and madeline decided to try some bougainvillea leaves. She was actually really observant and noted that the leaves had little holes in it, which she hypothesized was eaten by this particular caterpillar. This one died too, but not before it went from a whitish color to pink....bougainvillea infiltration I suppose.

But then I got grossed out. We went to the science center and saw an exhibit on Crime Scene Insects....bugs that help solve crimes. Cool, yes, but only until I realized that these caterpillars were really only larvae of some sort. Gross!

We went camping this weekend and got a super humongous tent for the whole family to enjoy. We've only had small compact, lightweight tents in the past, but since we're doing car camping these days, I figured we should go for the gusto and get a 4 sleeper, that's 6 feet tall to boot. It's so crazy to me to be able to stand up all the way INSIDE my tent. We had a good time. The weather was perfect, the campsite was right next to the running creek, and everyone slept pretty well. I think we'll be making a few more trips up this summer to escape the 100 degree weather we're already seeing!

Madeline graduates from preschool this week and will enter kindergarten next year. We were discussing what comes after kinder, after 1st grade, after 2nd grade, etc. So we get to 12th and Mads asks what comes after 12th grade and I tell her college. "What's college?" she asks. I talk it up, "College is when you get to move away from home, live on your own, with your friends, and study whatever you want." She simply states she doesn't want to go to college. Every day since this initial conversation, Madeline has told me that she DOES NOT want to go to college. She never wants to move out of the house, away from Jeff and me. I think she might change her mind one day, but then again, I've obviously given her a lot of anxiety over the subject.

Today Jeff had a beer in the pool and Lola asked for some beer. Jeff gave her a sip, but there wasn't much left in the bottle and no beer reached Lola's little mouth. Jeff took his bottle back and Lola demands, "I want beer...not for pretend!" So Jeff gives her a real sip and she wants more.

Madeline love to pick our hibiscus flowers. We'll have only a few on the bushes, but she loves to grab them. She wanted a picture taken with it in her hair (which she was psyched to have put it in all by herself) and then she did this curtsy pose.

The girls got new bath towels...appropriately Madeline got a duck and Lola got an Elephant.

Tonight Lola was eating spaghetti at the table. Maria walked in and said, "Jeffrey...oh my god...you are so beatiful." And Lola responded, "No, I'm a mess!"

The next morning Maria tells Lola that she loves her outfit. Without missing a beat, Lola responds..."I got it at Target." (But she didn't.)
